What is aloe vera?

Aloe vera is a plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family and grows in wild and tropical climates around the world. It’s a species that can thrive in arid and infertile terrain. Aloe vera is cultivated for agricultural and medicinal reasons. It can be found in a wide range of products, from drinks to skin care lotions.

How can aloe vera Help Your Skin?

The use of aloe vera goes back many centuries; indeed, the ancient Egyptians called it “the plant of immortality”. Studies have shown that this plant is beneficial in treating various skin concerns. Its soothing and hydrating properties make it an effective moisturizer for dry and flaky skin; it is also a great choice for oily and combination skin types, as it adds moisture without making leaving the skin greasy. Aloe vera leaves are packed with antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamin C and E, which all help to fight the signs of aging by making skin appear firmer and more radiant.

How is aloe vera Used?

The organic aloe vera found in Garnier’s Skin Active Natural Range is made from 100% preservative-free concentrated aloe vera gel. Harvesting this gel is a time-critical business: as aloe vera leaves are made up mostly of water, there is no time to lose or they risk drying up. That’s why our leaves are processed within 6 hours of cutting. The inner gel is extracted by hand, before being concentrated into a dry organic powder, which prevents contamination, while preserving the essential properties of the gel.

Where Does Mexican aloe vera Come From?

Garnier’s aloe vera is grown in the state of Campeche, in south-eastern Mexico. It is part of the Yucatan peninsula, with its long Gulf of Mexico coastline, it borders Belize and Guatemala. In the city, most of the land is owned and managed as a community, with a population of over 800,000 people.

Garnier works with smallholder farmers who grow the aloe vera plants on organically certified land; the supplier has a processing plant that converts the fresh aloe leaves into concentrated powder, which provides employment for people during the peak production months.

How is Biodiversity Being Protected?

Efforts are being made to protect the 400 endangered species and wildlife that can be found within the state of Campeche. Three main areas covering a total of almost 2 million hectares, have a protection status: The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, the Laguna de Términos Reserve and the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve.

Garnier trades with farmers who live on the edge of the region’s rainforests. By helping to create a sustainable income, the production of aloe vera reduces their reliance on chopping down trees and the forestry trade, which can further compromise the fragile local resources.
